Tove Styrke - Night & Day, Manchester

On a bitter Monday night, a crowd of young and old music fans gathered into the small halls of Night and Day Café eager to hear the cool-kid pop stylings of Sweden’s own Tove Styrke on her very first headline tour.

First up to grace the stage was Emily Burns, who jumped right in with a catchy acoustic start, which the crowd ate up. A more upbeat pop sound came next, with Tove Styrke’s influence extremely clear, getting the crowd to scream ‘you don’t have to be a bitch about it’. The crowd-pleasing pop continues with a cover of Mario’s Let Me Love You, and the ever relatable Friends Don’t Kiss Friends. And with that, the crowd are suitably warmed up and ready for their night of girl power performances to continue.

Tove Styrke takes to the Night and Day stage like she’s done it a million times before, barrelling into fan favourite Borderline from her 2015 album Kiddo. The dancing and running around does not stop as she bounces from Ego to the anthem-like chorus of On the Low. A switch-up of sounds come with a cover of Lorde’s ‘Liability’ from 2018 album Sway, which goes down incredibly well with the Night and Day crowd. Endless picks up the pace once again, with an intense drop, with Tove getting the crowd down on the ground and jumping up again.

Sway and Say My Name from Tove’s most recent release finish up the set, easily two of the most well-loved songs judging from how they are greeted by the crowd. With Tove’s enthusiastic dancing packing an extra punch to each song. As she disappears backstage, the crowd are already chanting for one more song. Tove is more than happy to oblige, coming back out with Been There Done That and Kiddo’s Number One.

The night ends with an exhausted crowd heading for the door, Styrke’s incredible energy has kept them dancing all night. Her unique sound and style in my opinion, have helped her stand out against the ‘ready for radio’ pop music of today, and it’s clear that her devoted fan base can’t get enough of her 21st century girl power pop.
