London based, Murcia born odd-pop star Alien Tango, also known as Alberto Garcia is part of the latest wave of Spanish talent to breakthrough in the UK.
His surreal take on pop tackles themes ranging from caring for your elders right through to ‘sexy time’ via a blend of glam psychedelia and down-to-earth wit.
Latest single Photosynthesis comes as an extended version of a fifteen second viral TikTok video, which has racked up over 1.5 million views and 34k shares. We chatted to Alberto about the impact TikTok has had on the industry and the current condition of the music scene in Spain.
Tell us a bit about yourself and how long you’ve been making music for?
Hi! I'm a Spanish musician and I once dipped a pizza in a lentil soup (it was good). I've been making music for about six years, since I was 19.
At what point in your life did you decide to make a career out of your music, and what influenced that decision?
When I was studying fine arts, my talent was such that it overflowed the borders of the faculty and I had to leave.
What would you say is the main source of influence for your songwriting?
The everyday life, ya know. Something will cross my mind and "bang!" it's already on a voice note on my phone, "bang, bang!" it's already sketched on Ableton Live, "bang, bang, bang!" it's already on your Hello Kitty speakers.
What is something you’ve learned about yourself through your music?
That I can be very pretentious.
If you could give your younger self one piece of advice, what would it be?
Learn to mix earlier!
You’ve become rather popular on TikTok, how do you feel about the impact the platform has had on the music industry?
I don't feel like it has really had any significant impact on the industry, but I might be wrang. I probably am, I have no idea of what I'm talking about.
What is the music scene like in Spain at the moment?
It's a bit like a huge aquarium that only has grass carps in it. There are very few different cool fishes hidden here and there but the staff of the aquarium doesn't feed them.
Who are some of your favourite upcoming Spanish artists?
Babalú Olé, Los Estanques, Supparedpanda, Yaz Veh, Baywaves, Fuckaine and Mala Cotton.
If your music was to soundtrack any film or TV show, which would you choose?
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.
What’s the bucket list goal for you? Where do you want to be in your career in a year’s time?
My goal for this past year was to tour the US and Europe, which I was gonna do but Covid-19 ruined everything. Now I just hope the album I'm recording turns out awesome and I'm able to grow my fanbase through social media.
