With a plethora of previous releases, Forgetting the Future have showed they have no signs of slowing down. We chatted with frontman Robbie McNicol to get to know them a bit better.
If you could describe the band in three words what would they be?
Dramatic , Explosive and melodic
What made you want to start making music as a band?
For me I’ve always been surrounded by music , my grandfather was a session musician from back in the 60s/70s and played in many different bands, so the blues has always been in my blood! But when I was about the age of 14 I started playing a few tiny youth club gigs with a few others and the nerves and adrenaline you get before and after a gig is so intense that I’m now addicted for life ahah!
What does the music you make mean to you?
The music I write means being able to relate to people I’ve never met or even spoken to when someone sings your lyrics back to you without ever seeing them before is a weird feeling but a warm one at that I’m a sucker for those tunes that make the hair on the back of your neck stand up weather it’s because of one lyric or a guitar riff etc..
Where would you like to see yourself as a band in 2 years?
In 2 years I’d like to be playing real gigs ahah! Nah but seriously I’d love to be playing festivals and gigs all around the UK to try and reach out to people and make new fans!
How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard it before?
I’d have to describe our music as ear exploding indie-rock! We take huge influence from bands like Catfish And The Bottlemen and The Wombats so you can definitely hear elements of their sound in there
How have you been keeping busy over this past year? Picked up any new hobbies/skills?
Over the past year in lockdown I myself have been surfing a lot in my home town to keep me busy along with writing a bucket load of songs that I’m just itching to release!! I’ve also been abusing Netflix like quite a lot of us I’d image ahah!
Who are your favourite artists at the moment?
You know I’ve been really enjoying Sea Shanty’s as much as I hate to admit that ahah! I don’t know what it is something about the harmonies I love it, it’s wicked! But as for artists I’ve been really enjoying Cage The Elephant they are magic I love their contrast in songs one minute your listening to a pop bop then it’s a dark rock and roll rolling stones kind of tune out of no where I’m digging it, I’ve also had a few songs from the SKINS tv show like tunes from the Scallywags on repeat because I only recently watched it, about 5 years too late but I’m obsessed!
Do any of you have any special skills / party tricks or any fun facts about yourselves?
Umm not anything special I’ve gotten amazing at making a mean mango smoothie not very rock and roll though ahah! Our guitarist jamie has been working as a painter through this long lockdown so he could probably paint you a right nice Mona Lisa by now!
What’s the rest of 2021 looking like for you?
Anything fun in the works? 2021 is looking extremely fun at the moment (covid dependent) we have a huge big fat Tour planned that we will be announcing soon but for now my lips are sealed ahah! we have some big shows booked so that is going to be insane!! And new mature sounding tunes too that we’ve recorded and are ready to be put out so they will hopefully come out through the year as it develops I’m sitting on the edge of my seat to releases them!
